Regarding his links to the discredited founder of FTX, Sam Bankman-Fried, two senators from the United States of America are demanding answers from the Chair of the Commodities and Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).
Senators Elizabeth Warren and Charles Grassley of the United States of America have sent a fresh letter to the Chair of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), Rostin Behnam, in which they inquire about his contact with Sam Bankman-Fried, who is now doing time in jail for his part in the collapse of FTX.
During the time that you served as Chair of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), we would like to reiterate our demand for an accounting of all of the meetings and correspondence that took place between you and Sam Bankman-Fried. A sentence of 25 years in jail was handed down to Mr. Bankman-Fried last month for the theft of $8 billion from subscribers of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX.
Despite the fact that this penalty was reasonable, it did not bring any solace to his victims, who would never be able to recover financially. For the sake of protecting the retirement and savings of the American people, it is necessary for Congress and market authorities such as the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to investigate the circumstances surrounding the commission of this multi-billion dollar crime.
The letter makes a request for a comprehensive account of all meetings, phone conversations, and written communication that took place between Behnam’s team and Bankman-Fried’s team. This account should include dates, meeting minutes, and copies of any written correspondence.
Additionally, the letter requests a list of any interactions that have taken place about Bankman-Fried, FTX, Alameda Research, or any connected executives that include Behnam or any employee of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.
In the letter, which is signed by both Warren and Grassley, the information is requested to be provided by the 29th of April, 2024. The senators assert that this information will assist them and the general public in the United States in comprehending the nature of the communication that Behnam had with Bankman-Fried in the months that preceded the public disclosure of his criminal activities.
